About Fredericksburg, VA

The Kenmore Plantation - Built By George Washington's Sister

Situated on several beautifully landscaped acres, Kenmore Plantation was originally built by George Washington’s sister, Betty Washington Lewis as well as her husband, Fielding Lewis.

This Georgian-style mansion is a window into the past, giving patrons a glimpse at what pre-Revolutionary War architecture looked like.

It also shows just how wealthy the couple was during the 1700s.

Lewis was so rich, in fact, that he loaned money to the state of Virginia to help them build and support a gun factory in Fredericksburg.

By the time he died in 1781, he was still owed quite a large sum of money, which was never repaid to his estate.

Today, Kenmore Plantation takes patrons back to a simpler time.

A visit to this incredible estate begins in the Crowinshield Museum building, which holds a number of furniture and decorative items from the 18th century.

Following that, patrons will then go on a 45-minute tour of the first floor of the house and kitchen, which will be lead by an interpreter.

After that, patrons are free to roam the plantation’s 3 acres of gardens and grounds at their leisure.
